International Polo Club | Fire Claims Polo-viewing Facility In Portsmouth
PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — An early morning fire Thursday demolished a grandstand on Linden Lane belonging to the Newport International Polo Club.
Fire Chief Jeff Lynch said the structure was completed last summer and was to have opened for the season this weekend.
The club’s website indicates that a benefit match for the Rotary Club was to have been held Saturday.
Lynch said the structure, measuring 100 by 40 feet, was “a total loss.”
He said the fire had spread extensively when firefighters arrived shortly after 5:35 a.m.
The fire chief described the structure as having a canvas cover and a two-story tower for announcers.
Lynch said it took about 45 minutes to quell the flames. “It had a good head start, and due to the nature of the construction it took us a while to extinguish,” he said. There were no injuries.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said.
