Play And Stay At Hotels Featuring Polo
The elite sport of polo has become increasingly accessible to travelers as hotels and resorts have started highlighting lessons and matches as one of their main attractions.
One of the newest polo destinations is the 12-room Estancia Vik Jos Ignacio , near Punta del Este, Uruguay, which opened last year. It offers lessons to all levels on its polo field for $150 an hour. Guests can also catch matches held on the house turf in December and January.
Another hotel catering to polo-loving travelers is the 2,500-acre Estancia El Venado , an establishment about 100 miles south of Buenos Aires owned by the professional player Federico Cendoya. It boasts two polo fields and 200 horses. From mid-October through mid-April Mr. Cendoya runs “polo school,” featuring morning polo lessons and coached afternoon practice sessions for $300, including lodging and meals.In South Africa, the 12-room Kurland Hotel on 1,700 acres in coastal Plettenberg Bay draws riders on the polo circuit as well as spectators, especially during the Kurland International match held in December. Match tickets start at 600 rand (about $84 at7 rand to the dollar).
And for travelers embarking on a polo-related journey, there is a new resource. St. Regis Hotels and Resorts, sponsor of an annual polo match in England, recently teamed up with the polo star Nacho Figueras to sponsor a Web site with a calendar, a guide to polo and etiquette tips, including when to stomp the divots.
