Polo Logo | Main Draw Announced As Sun Finally Breaks Through At US Open
There was something weird hovering in the sky over the National Tennis Center on Thursday morning. It was definitely a unique sight, something that none of the tennis fans had seen all week. It was the sun. It had finally broken through the clouds and was shining brighter than ever on what was a beautiful day full of action-packed tennis.Something else was going on around the grounds on Thursday.
ESPN was preparing for its live announcement of the draws for the main tournament that will begin on Monday. Many international media outlets crowded into an interview room, where the draws were unveiled on ESPN2. The tournament features 128 players for both men and women. Belgian tennis star, Kim Clijsters was on hand to draw for the women’s draw, and Serbian world No. 3 player Novak Djokovic was supposed to be there for the men, but never showed up. As for tennis, thousands of fans poured into the grounds on this day three of the qualifying tournament. And what a day it was!
Many matches were backed up because of the rain, and play lasted for 11 hours on this beautiful day. Among the highlights was budding American tennis star Ryan Harrison who made a spectacular comeback in the second set tiebreak to take it into a third and final set. After the first game, his leg cramped up and could hardly walk. He couldn’t serve and had to do an underhand serve. He fell behind 3-0 in the final set, and was on the brink of elimination before reeling off six straight games to claim victory in front of a wild crowd that had stayed for his match, the final match of the day at the tennis center. He was later helped off the court by his younger brother. A couple other notes about the U.S. Open… Although the tennis may be free this week, the food sure isn’t. A hamburger and fries will cost you 15 bucks, while a small cup of ice cream will cost you five dollars. One funny thing is that they have an item that they list as “ASSORTED FRUIT” for 1.50 cents. What I later learned was that assorted fruit was not actually mixture of various refreshing fruits but rather a banana or apple.
Another thing that I saw was just how ugly the new ball persons uniforms are. They are a separation of five different colors everything from red to blue to yellow. On the back of the uniform there is giant Ralph Lauren polo logo (they sponsor the uniform). The logo looks to have been ironed all of them. I was under the impression that their whole purpose was to go unnoticed on court.
